FAQ
Here you’ll find some answers to frequently asked questions about my art.
Are they really made of rust and how do you do it?
Yeah, they are made of rust on steel. What I do is protect certain areas of the metal, and leave other areas exposed. I then leave the panels outside for the rain, snow, dew and general chaos of the Rocky Mountains to corrode and affect the steel.
Do you use rust paints and muriatic acids?
No. Such methods for simulating and creating rust is not something I am interested in.
Can I touch it?
Please do. Just don’t pick at it or I’ll have to kill you.
How long do they take to make?
I’ve rusted pieces for over a year and other for a few months. It all depends on weather conditions and how satisfied I am with the color and texture of the rust.
Will it mark my walls?
No. There is a “Hanging Lip” (on the back) which is buffed back to shiny clean steel which will not leave any marks on your walls.
How should the works be cleaned?
A light feather dusting will do. Do not spray with cleaning products or rub with a rag. Rust is abrasive and wiping with a cloth will catch on it.
Where should they be displayed?
In any dry indoor area. Even though each piece is created outdoors and protected with multiple coats of sealer I only recommend you hang them indoors and avoid damp and steamy areas like bathrooms.
Will my piece continue to rust?
Yes, exceptionally slowly. The oldest piece I have was created in 2002 and has been hanging in my living room with no sign of change whatsoever.
How heavy are they?
It depends on the gauge (thickness) of metal that I use. Typically, the smaller pieces are about 10 pounds, the larger pieces about 20 pounds. The mega sized stuff varies from piece to piece.
Can I hang them from the ceiling?
Yes, if you have systems in place to handle the weight, then you can hang them from the ceiling by using the half-inch Hanging Lip on the back to attach your hardware.
Is each piece signed, named and dated?
Yes, all of them. I won’t ever release a piece into the wild without a signature, date, name and sometimes … a little message.
